As most of you know, I was out of the office this weekend celebrating a glorious occasion, my sister in law’s proposal! About a month ago Thomas (Rikki’s boyfriend) called me to help plan his proposal to Rikki on Friday before Valentine’s Day. Having such a love for planning (and Rikki) of course, I was dying to help. Thomas and I planned all the logistics and had a wonderful evening scheduled. Needless to say, not everything goes as planned (hint to all you brides out there- nothing ever is going to be perfect)
I arrived in Washington with Ryan (my hubby) and his mom Nancy (who flew in from Nashville, TN as a surprise to Rikki). We got into D.C around 4:30pm and went to the spot where Thomas was going to propose to set up his picnic. Well, unfortunately, the fountain was not running (even though I checked with the park ranger to make sure it would be) Nancy and I found a gazebo off to the side of a path that we thought would be a fantastic alternate spot. We set up their blanket, hot chocolate, sign, and a rose . I stayed hidden in the woods while Nancy ran to the car to meet Ryan. After several phone messages back and forth to Thomas, he finally found the gazebo (he actually came down the wrong side and walked right behind me). I stayed hidden as best as I could and took as many photos in the evening air as best as I could. The end result… a surprised Rikki and a relieved Thomas… Rikki had said yes.
When Rikki and Thomas left the gazebo, I slipped away to meet Nancy and Ryan. We then left D.C and headed to the Gaylord National Hotel where Rikki and Thomas were staying. We got into their room and decorated it with 600 rose petals, heart shaped balloons, streamers, and wedding bells. 45 mins later, Nancy, Ryan and I hid and listened to Rikki gasp for air as she entered the room. She was totally shocked. We jumped out from behind the bedroom and wall and all Rikki said was “Momma!” and started crying!
It was such a sweet moment seeing Rikki surprised that her family was present. It was even sweeter seeing Ryan, the boy who leaves all “planning” up to me, jump in and help make his sisters proposal a special one.
Below are photos from the proposal as well as the rest of our time in Washington D.C.
Rikki and Thomas – Ryan and I are so thrilled for you and are so grateful we were able there during you magical moment! We love you lots!!!
